CAMBRIDGE, MA, January 13, 2017, Rob Moir, Ph.D., Director of the Ocean River Institute, has been recognized for showing dedication, leadership and excellence in environmental management.

With a desire to protect the environment, Dr. Rob Moir embarked on a career in this very field. He is an educator, scientist and activist with a proven history in institutional management and marine policy success. He has been a leader of citizen science efforts to clean up the Salem Sound and Boston Harbor, and was the president of some advocacy organizations, including Salem Sound Harbor Monitors, Salem Sound Coastwatch and Save the Harbor/Save the Bay, through his appointment by the secretary of interior to the Boston Harbor Islands Partnership. Additionally, Dr. Moir was a curator of natural history at The Peabody Essex Museum, a curator of education at the New England Aquarium and an executive director of The Discovery Museums in Acton, Mass. He was also the Sea Education Association’s first assistant scientist to work consecutive voyages on the R/V Westward in 1979 and 1980.

Dr. Moir currently serves as the director of the Ocean River Institute, a nonprofit environmental organization that provides support services for environmental groups, citizen science training and support, environmental monitoring, survey and assessmentm, collaborative ecosystem-based management; bio-regional planning and management, and ecosystem and wildlife stewardship. Skilled in ecosystem-based resource management, Dr. Moir is charged with coordinating with local groups to help save the environment, fundraising, and maintaining a network of Ocean River Institute partners and connecting them with resources and services to maximize their impact. He prepared for his career by earning a Bachelor of Arts in natural science from Hampshire College in 1977 and a Master of Science in teaching from Antioch University New England two years later. He went on to earn a Ph.D. in environmental studies from Antioch University New England in 2002. Dr. Moir also holds certification in ecology from The Marine Biological Laboratory.

A former president of the National Marine Educators Association and the Essex County Ornithological Club, Dr. Moir remains updated in his field through his affiliation with the Stellwagen Bank National Marine Sanctuary Advisory Council and the Advisory Council of the Boston Harbor Islands National Park Area, of which he serves as chairman. He has been given several awards over his career, including the James Centorino Award for Distinguished Performance in Marine Education from the National Marine Educators Association in 1988, and the Rockefeller Brothers Fund Award for the Development of a College Course on Cetacean Biology, Ecology and Conservation in 1976. Dr. Moir also held a Switzer Environmental Fellowship from the Robert & Patricia Switzer Foundation in 1996.

Dr. Moir attributes his successful career to his organizational skills, management expertise, and listening and communication skills, and looking ahead, he intends to further engage citizens and families as eco-stewards to create clean and healthy environments, and attain a better quality of life for humans and wildlife. He would also like to see an increased responsible stewardship of natural resources by the government, including oceans, rivers and watersheds.
